NAATI CCL Test Format & Structure
Everything you need to know about how the Credentialed Community Language (CCL) test is structured, marked, and evaluated.
2 Dialogues
The test consists of two recorded dialogues representing real-life situations in Australian society.
~300 Words Each
Each dialogue is approximately 300 words long, split into shorter segments.
20 Minutes
The entire online test session typically takes around 20 minutes to complete.
How the Dialogues Work
Each dialogue involves a conversation between an English speaker and a LOTE (Language Other Than English) speaker. You act as the interpreter between them.
- The dialogue is broken into segments (usually 10-12 per dialogue).
- Each segment is up to 35 words long.
- You will hear a chime sound at the end of each segment. You must begin interpreting within a few seconds of hearing the chime.
- You must interpret what the English speaker says into your LOTE, and what the LOTE speaker says into English.
Marking & Passing Criteria
Two examiners evaluate your performance independently. They start with full marks and deduct points for any errors made during interpretation.
Important Rule
Even if your total score is 63 or above, you will fail the test if your score in either individual dialogue falls below 29 marks. You must pass both dialogues consistently.
Deductions (What to Avoid)
Examiners deduct marks for errors that impact the meaning or flow of the conversation. Common errors include:
Omissions
Leaving out important information or details (like dates, numbers, or key facts).
Distortions
Changing the meaning of what was said, or mistranslating a critical word.
Unjustified Additions
Adding your own explanations, opinions, or extra information that was not said.
Hesitation & Fluency
Stuttering, excessive pausing, or taking too long to begin speaking after the chime.
